Registered domains show their expiry date, registrar and lock status instead — so a "taken" answer still tells you something useful.
Why do other tools say a domain is taken when it is free?Many availability checkers read cached lists that lag behind the registry, and some registrars show a domain as unavailable while they hold it in a temporary reservation. Querying the registry avoids both.
The registry record is the legal source of truth: if it has no entry, no reservation held by a reseller changes the fact that the name is registrable.
